Surfing the web from my iPhone in bed on Saturday morning, I Just found out that T-Mobile is releasing two ... count 'em ... two new Sidekicks in October. How on Earth am I going to be able to carry on a conversation, walk the dog, or drive? I'm all over Google now ... Sidekick news ... techcrunch ... goodness.

Massive, massive update to utilware.com
I've always wanted to have a decided chunk of time to do a complete overhaul on utilware.com. I had been noodling around on a new design for the past few months, and lo and behold, a serious chunk of time just presented itself thanks to my gall bladder operation and recovery. So, take a look at it (start at utilware.com) and tell me what you think. My personal e-mail is on Yahoo!, where my address is billwesterman (sorry to be so obtuse, but it keeps the spambots at bay for now).
Enjoying iTunes downloads
The inlaws sent me a ton of iTunes music and shows as gifts, and WiFi is
up! Woot!

The hospital is teasing me with a "Guest_Access" WiFi access point that
isn't actually connected to the net. Ah well, the iPhone/Sidekick combo
keeps me online. (Here for gall bladder surgery, no big, out soon ...
ideally.)

iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and Starbucks and T-Mobile
So from my experience, the de-facto standard Wi-Fi provider at Starbucks in the United States is T-Mobile. So when you take your iPhone Touch (myself) to Starbucks and purchase music, do you end up pulling the bits through the T-Mobile network? If so, I'm assuming they get a cut somewhere along the line. Then again, the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store rollout appears to be in stages across the US. Does that mean they'll be switching to AT&T Wi-Fi? I certainly hope not, because that'll really divide up the US market for WiFi hotspots - right now a T-Mobile account will get you online pretty much anywhere you need.
8GB iPhone for $399. Boo, hiss.
Ok, I was already on the fence on this little phone, and today Apple drops the price by $200 on my 8GB iPhone. Wow, that's just painful. Makes me think twice about my next Apple purchase.

iPhone loses its mind (again)
About every 50th time I start up the camera app on the iPhone, it comes
up with a strange split-screen viewfinder like this. The top half of
the image is shown at the bottom, and vice-versa. The pictures
themselves still turn out fine, and all I have to do is restart the
camera app for it to fix itself, but still strange nonetheless.

iPhone versus Sidekick - the decision
So I've been trying to decide between the iPhone and the Sidekick 3, and it's been a long decision making process. Both have serious benefits, and some drawbacks. So I've activated both of them for now, the iPhone being the primary device, and the Sidekick on a $30 month-to-month plan.
Where we stand (and no, this isn't a comprehensive list, and it builds on earlier postings on the topic):
iPhone: The Good
- Large, colorful, hi-res display
- Desktop-caliber web browsing
- Good camera, when it's cooperating
- Nice sync with iCal and Address Book
- Google Maps is fantastic, even without GPS
Sidekick: The Good
- Awesome keyboard. I'm realizing that I can indeed touch-type on it without really even looking at the keyboard.
- Instant messaging exists and works, absolutely. If you're in an area with touchy coverage (like rural AZ), the Danger servers will cache any inbound messages until your SK gets back into range. And working while on vacation this week, I've realized just how fundamental IM is to our business.
- Flexible and powerful e-mail. I can reply to an e-mail from one account using another account. Separate signatures for each account (business versus personal). Easily delete dozens of messages at once.
- Super fast access to apps: just hit Jump+B for browser, Jump+I for AIM, Jump+Y for YIM, Jump+E for E-mail. Sooo quick, and none of that up-down-up navigation from the iPhone.
- I can actually read things on the browser, without all that pinching and swiping around.
- E-mailing photos to Flickr is quick and easy, and sends the full-sized image
- Treats SMS conversations much like e-mail. Easy. And unlimited SMSing is included in the $29/mo plan.
iPhone: The Bad
- Too many websites are sniffing out the iPhone and altering their appearance accordingly. For example, with Yahoo! Mail, I can't get it to render the standard HTML version - it always gives me the WAP version, which means I don't have access to several important features ... like my business e-mail
- Hard to take pictures because you're worried you're going to drop it
- Even harder to hand to someone else to take your picture, say at the Grand Canyon, without having to explain how to take pictures with the thing
- Still can't get the hang of the virtual keyboard, and I'm usually the first to warm up to something like that
- Enough limitations in the Mail that I've completely given up on it
- When it's 100º out, the screen gets kind of slimy. You need a good cotton t-shirt to get the smears off.
- When you e-mail to Flickr, the pictures are resized to 640x480. Boo!
Sidekick: The Bad
- No way to get the web browser to render the page in desktop layout
- Camera can be wonky in dark light (so can the iPhone camera, but in general the iPhone is better)
- It's big, folks. Real big.
- Doesn't have all the iLife and PIM integration with the Mac
So the (lame) verdict is ... I'm currently carrying both devices 24/7. Ugh.

Old Jerome High School
Wow, my first 'mystical' experience in AZ, but not the
crystals-and-peyote kind. It's an old-skool old school, big boned, two
stories, brick construction, converted into artist studios. Vent
windows above the classroom doors. Stone floors. Man, what a flashback
to growing up in KCMO with the big schools there and the artist
community around my parents.

Locked ourselves out of the room last night
The room had a back door into a large common area. We went exploring,
and ended up locking ourselves out of our room ... we had a key, but we
had deadbolted the door from the inside. Ilana went to look for the
maintenance guy, and meanwhile I crawled in through the window and
opened the room from the inside. Back in business!
